When cleaning the sand and gravel from a hermit crab tank, what do you do with the hermit crabs?

My tank has a misture of sand and gravel, apparently you just take it out and wash it and let it dry. That would take awhile wouldn't it, what do you do with the crabs while it is drying. And how do you wash sand? thanks
